2020

Update: Winners have been chose and emailed back! Prizes are in the mail. Thank you all for entering. Prizes included a queer book bought from a local bookstore, a cross stitch I made, and rainbow gourmet popcorn from Cashmere Popcorn.

Hello all!

Just your neighborhood queer here trying to get people to read more. What gets me reading more is reading challenges. They also make my grandmother read more, but I beg you, please read more books than only Danielle Steel and books with dogs on the cover. Expand your horizons, read to explore. Read about cats even. Something.

Back to the point! 2020 will have a reading challenge hosted by MI Book Reviews. I will pause here for the cheering crowds. No cheering yet? Damn. Well how about if I mention there will be two prizes awarded?

The contest is simple: if you complete a single item on the challenge list, you will be entered to win a small prize in a drawing. If you complete the whole challenge, then you will get entered into winning the big prize AND the small prize. The prizes themselves will be physical items, but if you are uncomfortable sharing your address with us, we understand. We will work a digital prize out. To be eligible for prizes you just need to email your list to mibookreviews@gmail.com with a short review of the top book(s) (the reviews are just so I can add new books to my to-read shelf if I am being honest).

1. A non-fiction book about a gender or sexuality that is not your own
2. A book with a trans main character that doesn’t die or get sexually assaulted
3. A book with a non-binary character
4. A young adult book with a same sex love plot
5. A memoir of anyone who is part of the queer community
6. A book with an asexual character or author
7. A M/M romance with no on page sex scenes
8. A book by a queer person of color
9. A queer anthology
10. A book about someone coming out when they are older
11. A graphic novel
12. A poetry collection by someone who is part of the queer community
13. A fantasy or sci-fi book with a queer character
14. A children’s book with a queer theme
15. Any book labeled as LGBTQ on MI Book Reviews (iam also uses the tag queer, so I think that should count! They also use more descriptive terms like lesbian. Any queer terms will count on this one!)
16. A book recommended to you by a person in the queer community (Everyone who has reviewed on this blog is queer. So even if you don’t know a lot of book people, you know us and we totally count. Any book that we have reviewed positively counts. You can always email us and we will find a book to recommend to you!)
17. A book that would just be better if it was queer (literally any book you read where you think it could be improved by adding a queer character, letting one of your unfulfilled queer ships happen, or maybe a trans character would just have been a better fit. You control this one!)
18. A speculative fiction featuring a queer character or by a queer author
19. A queer book that doesn’t have a rainbow on the cover
20. A queer book with a rainbow on the cover

Check back over the course of the year to see hints and links to help you finish the challenge.

For a more monochrome tracker click here.

The less fun part: rules.

  1. The books must be read between January 1st, 2020 and December 31st, 2020.
  2. To be eligible for prizes the email with your list/reviews must be in the mibookreviews@gmail.com inbox by midnight Central Standard Time.
  3. Winners will be drawn on January 1st, 2021 or shortly after. I will send emails to the winners. If there are no responses for a week, then I will draw a new name. They will have a week. And so on. Once all Prizes have been claimed, the wining book lists will be published on this page with consent of the readers. If they don’t wish to share their lists, then lists will not be posted. Feel free to share your lists though!

Good luck!

~Isaiah
