Hello all!

I am hoping to get you all the tips posted by the end of November so you don’t have to scramble at the end of the year trying to finish the challenge. Remember, you just need to read ONE book and email mibookreviews@gmail.com about it to be entered into the drawing for a small prize. If you read all the books, you are entered to win a small prize AND a big prize. No one has entered yet, so your chances are wonderful!

2. A book with a trans main character that doesn’t die or get sexually assaulted

This is a super important prompt. Trans characters in media are allowed so very few plot lines, the two biggest being they are killed or raped (another big one is they are a murderous man pretending to be a woman to get away with it or because they are mentally unstable *cough* Rowling is a TERF *cough*). There is finally a shift towards trans people being allowed to live through a book or a movie and be the good person. So I wanted to make sure that trans people had a chance to see themselves survive a book.

Without more rambling, books!

George – a quick read, but not the best read out there for trans stuff. Deadnaming the trans character as the title is ick. Rick also has a trans MC and a nonbinary character too. Has some deadnaming in it too.

Recognize Fascism: A Science Fiction and Fantasy Anthology has wonderful trans characters. There is one story that features sexual assault in the past, so I think it squeaks by.

Dan’s Hauntastic Haunts series. All but two of the short stories have a trans MC finding love and hunting ghosts. Wonderful reads, available on Kindle Unlimited and the short stories are available on the author’s website for free.

Every Heart a Doorway has a trans MC, though his backstory is a bit reductive (he is trans, oh no), the current book timeline is wonderful. Has other queer characters too! iam finally read it after I bugged them forever, so I linked to their review!

The Four Profound Weaves is AMAZING. The two MCs are trans and are totally the sort of heroes I needed to read.

Pet features sexual assault, but not of the trans character. Instead the trans character actually helps hunting down the bad guy. Her being trans is mentioned only in the beginning to set up the story, her being trans isn’t a plot point more a “look how wonderful this world is where trans people are respected and loved”.

Nevada is a weird book. Tons of drug use and stream of consciousness ranting, but no sexual assault of murder.

All of Xan West’s books count. They wrote some wonderfully queer and trans characters that are just the sort of wholesome that is needed. Not all of the books feature a trans MC, but there is a trans character in every book I have read.

I Wish You All The Best features a nonbinary MC, which I will fight anyone who claims nonbinary people aren’t trans enough to count.

Blood Sport features a trans teen coming into his own. I just loved this one.

Lulu is a Rhinoceros is clearly about a trans person. It is also a short, adorable picture book that shows that people should be loved for who they are, not who you think they are based on how they look.

Looking for Group was a quick read that was pretty great!

Cemetery Boys JUST A HUGE YES RIGHT HERE

As the Crow Flies has a trans MC and her transness is just part of her instead of being all of her.

Lumberjanes trans MC from the very beginning and there is the sweetest scene where she helps an egg figure some stuff out.

Sasha From the Gym is just some good graphic novel trans smut.

Sarah Gailey has a few good books that would count like American Hippo or Upright Women Wanted. Both feature nonbinary MCs written by a nonbinary author! American Hippo is still my favorite Gailey book.

I could go on forever about the YA books that are finally featuring trans characters being more than trans and more than a tragedy. Adult books are starting to follow.
