“Nothing was going to ruin Castle’s holiday.
Except for the mocking laughter of the dead.
Castle was anticipating a lovely break at the seaside. His glamorous film star mistress was even joining him.
However, an unexpected encounter leaves Castle reeling. There’s a chance that someone knows his darkest secret and no matter what, he’s going to have to deal with it.
All his life, Castle has been the luckiest bloke he knew.
That luck might be about to run out”
I got an ARC of this book.
This book gives the perfect example of a main character that just deserves everything bad that could possibly happen to him. From the very first page, Castle was just this awful character. He was a cheat, slimy, misogynistic, and worse. There was just so much about him to hate. I LOVED HATING HIM. There were no mixed feelings, there were no redeeming qualities. There was just pure hatred and it felt so freeing.
The plot felt so voyeuristic. I got to live out all of these terrible things that Castle did and felt. There was a bit of unreliable thrown in here and there, but it just sucked me in deeper. I could have read about Castle for many more pages and been just as enthralled.
Why did I love hating him so much? Why did his exploits hold my attention so well when he was just this disgusting person inside and out? I have to give credit to Jameson for his ability to capture me. The way he writes is nothing shot of amazing. I could easily read anything written by him and just fall into the trap. There was no reason that I would like this book. There are other books that tried to use plot points that were similar that just disgusted me and I put the book down. Yet, somehow Jameson was able to make me want more.
I don’t want to spoil too much of the ending, so I apologize for the vague. I was a bit let down that the ending didn’t fully destroy Castle. It was amazing what happened, but I was hoping for more. It did not detract from the story, I just hated Castle that much. I needed him destroyed more thoroughly for me to feel fully satisfied, even though it didn’t fit with the plot or how the supernatural played out in the book. I just REALLY hated him. So my complaint is the author did such a good job making me hate a character, that I needed more torture. That is a new one for me.
5 out of 5 stars. I would recommend this book.
