“When it comes to grades, bookish high school student Mariko Kumakura is at the top of her class. Socially, however, she is shy and lonely, typically eating lunch by herself. Enter the charismatic and beautiful Akko Oohashi, whose goal is to befriend Mariko and burst her out of her introverted shell.

In the process of transforming Plain Jane Mariko into one of the cutest, most popular girls in school, deep feelings begin to emerge that suggest something deeper than friendship. Will these feelings destroy the budding relationship between Mariko and Akko, or will it turn into something else?”

So this is the first of two omnibus collections of the series Girl Friends. The series is five books long. The first omnibus has the first two and a half volumes. I really wish that there was more to it!

This series follows an accidental loner, Mariko, finally getting to have good friends in high school. She is approached one day after a test by Akko. They become fast friends despite them being drastically different people. Mariko is shy, sweet, and a bit of a nerd. Akko is boisterous, feminine, and more of an eater than a good student. Akko introduces Mariko to being a high school girl, a new group of friends, and even love.

Mariko falls for Akko first. Mariko realizes that she is in love when she gets jealous when she hears that Akko isn’t a virgin. Things go haywire from there. There is a lot of misunderstandings, some angst, and a lot of awkward advances.

I LOVE HOW CUTE THIS IS. This is one of the more graphic yuris I have read, but even still it was one of the cutest. You have to read this if you like sweet, angsty romance. Akko, while she isn’t my normal type for a ship, once you get used to her outspokenness you realize that she has a really good heart and that she isn’t a complete airhead like she appears. Mariko is a little more courageous than she appears. Together they are so CUTE!

5 out of 5 stars. I would highly recommend this manga.
