“Darius, a fallen Brother, has returned to the fold with a new identity and a very different destiny. Now, John Matthew, plunged into the heart of war, must face off against evil incarnate-and rescue his one true love.”

Remember the first book in the series? The dad of the main girl talked with the Scribe Virgin and was reborn with no knowledge of who he was. He was then raised by humans, orphaned, and raped until he was introduced to the vampires. Now he is in love with Xhex who was kidnapped by his enemy that he thought his best friend had killed when they were working in the last book to save the last people who was kidnapped. Ward’s go to plot: Kidnapping.

So Xhex who was described as manly and not at all feminine was kidnapped and violently raped repeatedly while John goes insane trying to get her back. Damsel in distress has a new take in this book, when she ends up saving herself and John LETS her kill her enemy. They get married and they have a lot of emotional issues since he doesn’t want her to get hurt and she is a sympath. There is a lot of crazy obstacles, including Xhex having a male go insane knowing she was a sympath before.

This book was one of my least favorite as it broke and rewrote so many of the rules set by the author. There was even an angel in it for no reason and the author acted like it was a character that we had met before. I am not a fan of this author, by doing a cross-over and giving no explanations it takes away from the one series I was even considering finishing. If you are wildly successful then a cross over is ok. Ward, you are no Rowling or Tolkien who have characters that even people that have not read the book will know.

Add to it the back plot of all the other characters like John’s best friends totally being in love, his vampire dad dealing wit the death of his wife, and so much more. This book tries to be more than romance, but doesn’t do romance well. If this book were solely about the way between the lessening society and the vampires I would like it so much more which is funny, because I love bad romance novels. I am addicted to this series, but I have no reason to be outside of wanting to finish what I started.

2 out of 5 stars. I would not recommend this book.
